Workington

Fishing is both sides of the harbour on the north or south beaches. It can be rough ground in places mixed with slag – a legacy of the towns industrial heyday. There are patches of cleaner ground particularly on the south beach. Both areas tend to fish best in a southwesterly on rising tides but strong winds and a big wave can bring a lot of weed in which makes for frustrating fishing.

From spring through to September plaice and flounders make up much of the catch together with school bass and the odd better fish adding to the mix. Come October and attention switches to codling and whiting with a few coalfish around from November. Crab is generally the preferred bait for the summer months switching to worm for the codling and whiting. Night fishing can be more productive for the cod.
