This is a picturesque and peaceful six acres fishery situated some 800 feet above sea level on Osmotherley Moor just over a mile north of Ulverston. Knottallow is a brown trout only water managed by Ulverston Angling Association who stock the water with fish averaging a pound and a quarter. Larger fish up to 3lbs are present.
Knottallow is a shallow water and a floating line is all that is required for a competent angler to enjoy excellent sport with imitative patterns. Fly life is abundant with good hatches of buzzers and olives together with falls of terrestrials such as Hawthorn Flies, Black Gnats and Beetles. Depending upon the season, Fraser Nymphs, Black Spiders, Black Beetles, CDC emergers, ‘F’ Flies, Klink hammers and Suspender Buzzers in sizes 14 to 16 work well on this water.
When the fish aren’t showing try a team of black buzzers fished static on a floating line – allow to drift on the breeze and watch the line “like a hawk” for takes. Fly sizes are generally 12’s down to 18’s or even smaller.
Travelling west into Ulverston on the A590 to a mini roundabout, there is the Booths supermarket to your left. Go straight on to the next roundabout and take the third exit past the Hartley’s Brewery. Cross the pedestrian crossing following the road as it bears left then straight on. You will come to a small white painted roundabout at the bottom of Soutergate. From here head up the hill .past Old Hall Farm on your left. When you reach the next set of buildings take the next right up the hill toward Boretree Stile. Head up this steep hill until you see Knottallow Tarn on your left.
