A largish tarn, enjoy the mountain scenery with a relatively short walk. Grisedale Tarn lies above Dunmail Raise at the southern end of the Helvelyn ridge and can be reached (by a reasonably fit angler) in forty five minutes from the top of Dunmail.
The most productive areas are either side of the outflow but trout can be expected to turn up anywhere, Some of the perimeter is boggy but it can be fished all round in the usual manner with a team of wets – or even dries if it’s one of those infrequent days when fish are on the surface. Most trout will average six ounces but you might just wheedle out one or two better ones.
It can be moody though. I’ve fished it on six occasions – on three of those sport was fast and furious but on the other three I would have sworn it was empty.
NB. The high tarns of Lakeland are wonderful places to visit and a privilege to fish. Their trout populations are unique and vulnerable. Nearly all of those you catch will be small fish – please treat them kindly and put them back.
