Silecroft

This is a very popular and accessible beach just north of Millom. The beach is steep shingle at first but soon changes to sand with odd patches of broken ground. At low water its a long walk and it can flood quickly on the bigger tides.

Over the summer months and into early autumn most anglers target the bass but it can produce good bags of dabs, flounder and the occasional plaice. Dogfish frequently respond to fish baits in calm weather and occasionally mackerel come inshore in the summer months and can be caught from the beach at high water. Look for the signs that they are about i.e. feeding flocks of sea-birds and stranded whitebait. In October codling begin to show up along with whiting and coalie and are best fished for in onshore wind conditions.

South Cumbria Sea Sports Association have their base at Silecroft with tractors used to launch boats down the difficult first part of the shingle beach.
