Port Carlisle lies on the south bank of the Eden estuary and marks the starting point on the Solway for sea fishing proper. This is a essentially a ‘flattie bashing’ mark although the odd bass and plaice may also turn up. Fishing along this stretch is generally at high water over the grassy banks. Peeler crab is the favoured bait.
You’ll be fishing over centuries of history here. Just a mile or so west at Bowness on Solway is the start of Hadrians Wall. The Roman legions also enjoyed the same marvellous views over the Solway to the hills of Dumfries – and no doubt welcomed the couple of miles of open water between themselves and the marauding Scots.
